The right time,
not all the time.
A short note on why return is the load-bearing word in everything we have written about Naya — and what it actually means in software.
The first thing people ask about Naya is, "Is it a notes app?" The honest answer is "no, but close enough that the distinction will not matter until you have used it." The distinction is the word return.
Notes apps optimise for capture. Capture is, on most days, easy. There are nine ways to type or speak a thought into a phone before the thought is finished. The thing that is hard — and that no app I can find has tried to solve directly — is bringing the right thought back, at the moment when bringing it back would help.
What "return" is, exactly
Return is the inverse of capture. Capture says: here is a thing, hold it. Return says: here is the thing you held, the moment you would want it is now. Most software has heard the first sentence. Almost none of it has heard the second.
The reminder app says, "it is 9am on Tuesday." Naya says, "you are walking past the bookshop and three weeks ago you said the brief was really about forecasting being mostly remembering."
The reminder app does not know anything about your atmosphere. It does not know what you've been working on. It does not know that the brief is sitting open. It only knows the time you set, three weeks ago, when you were a different person.
Why "context" is the load-bearing word too
To return the right thread at the right moment, you have to keep more than the thread. You have to keep the context around the thread: where you were, what came before, what was sitting on your screen, what you said about it, the weather, the time of day, the place. This is the bit that gets lost when notes apps store words.
Words are evidence. Context is the case.
Why "the right time" is harder than "the right thing"
If you had to choose between bringing back exactly the right thought at the wrong time, and a close-enough thought at exactly the right time, the second is almost always more useful. The right time gives you the room to do something with the thought. The right thing in the wrong room is just noise you have to file again.
This is why Naya cares more about when than what. The threading is hard, the resurfacing engine is harder, but the choice of moment is the part we lose sleep over.
What this means for the product
Practically: every screen in Naya is designed around the question, "is this the right time?" The Today surface shows one thread because one thread is the most a person can hold at the right moment. The atmospheres exist because the right time is often "later than you think". The refusal of streaks and counts is a refusal to confuse frequent with right.
